What you should know about African Schoolroom

The African Schoolroom Make a difference through a life changing African education experience. For ten years she was the Director of the Uplands Outreach Programme (which is attached to independent schools Uplands Preparatory School and Uplands College and offers educational upliftment to teachers and learners from disadvantaged schools). She has an excellent relationship with the Mpumalanga Department of Education and with the schools and communities in the area. In addition to the placement of students, student teachers and in-service teachers in rural and township schools for assistant teacherships and project managing school tours, Liz is a Journey Practitioner. She offers emotional counselling to rural school learners to help them cope with adverse circumstances which can create hopelessness and despair and prevent them from reaching their full potential. Liz has two grown-up children, has written a book and is a member of the Rotary Club of White River. Make a difference through a life changing African education experience. Rural and township schools in South Africa face many challenges inherited from the apartheid era, ranging from large classes and inadequate facilities, to lack of water, poverty-stricken communities and the growing number of orphans and vulnerable children. In spite of the difficulties the schools face, time spent there has proven to be fulfilling, and even life-changing. Their service project was at Entokozweni Primary School in Kabokweni, where they built a kitchen, prepared and planted up a vegetable garden, painted teaching aids on wall, including a map of the world, and worked in the classrooms with the 750 pupils of Entokozweni. Their work on site was punctuated with trips and excursions to see the best that Mpumalanga has to offer, and culminated in a fabulous adventure at Elephants Drift. Each year for the last 11 years, Martin Green and his team from Dustin’s Greenhouse have engaged under-served teenage students in their Globetrotter programme, set up in memory of their late son Dustin. The goal is to open their eyes to the world and their particular situation and put them on a path to success, no matter what their past has been. One of the great successes and differences of DGH from other travel related programs is the selection of kids who would never otherwise be able to experience the leadership training and the life changing experience of diving into a culture and helping kids who suffer much more than they ever thought was possible. It was a trip of a lifetime for them all and fulfilled a long-time wish for the caregivers and kids at the Centre.
